Ukraine Ready to Participate in Peacekeeping Operations in Abkhazia
(Tbilisi, January 12, Civil Georgia) – Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Anatoli Zlenko visited Georgia on January 12. He held negotiations with his Georgian counterpart Irakli Menagarishvili.
During the meeting Anatoli Zlenko assured Georgian official that Ukraine will participate in the peacekeeping operation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone in case the operation will be under the UN auspices.
Russian peacekeepers’ mandate, deployed in Abkhazia under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States expired on December 31, 2001.
Ukraine is the only state so far, which expressed readiness to dispatch peacekeeping troops in Abkhazia.
