President Set Date for Local Self-Governance Elections

(Tbilisi, March 28, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze signed a decree setting local self-governance elections for June 2, 2002.

In case the Parliament amends existing law on local-self governance elections a new date will be set.

Parliamentarians agreed on March 24 to discuss a new draft, which will consider election of city mayors and district governors from the Sakrebulos [elected local councils].

President appoints mayors and governors at the moment.
