Reformers Accuse Government in Undermining Situation in Regions

(Tbilisi, April 4, Civil Georgia) – Movement for Democratic Reforms Parliamentary faction Chairman Kote Kemularia accused government in intention to destabilizing situation in Samegrelo, western region of Georgia.

Kemularia’s statement at the Parliamentary session on April 4 followed reformers leader Mikheil Saakashvili’s trip to Samegrelo on April 3, when reformers’ opposite groups obstructed his meeting with the local population.

“Obstruction against Saakashvili was organized by the local governor and central government,” Kemularia said.

“Government realizes that it has no chance to win local elections and that is why government tries to obstruct oppositions’ meetings with the population,” reformers’ leader Mikheil Saakashvili stated at the Parliamentary session.

“It is inadmissible when the deputy governor of Samegrelo leads group of bandits,” Koba Davitashvili, Movement for Democratic Reforms faction member stated at the session today.

Reformers claim that President Shevardnadze tries to delay local self governance elections with destabilizing situation in the regions.

On April 3 armed group dissolved Saakashvili’s meeting with the local population of Samegrelo region.
