President Orders to Stop Religious Rights Violation
(Tbilisi, May 20, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze stated in his traditional radio interview today that he understands the concern of the US senators about the violations of religious rights in Georgia.
Shevardnadze issued an order on May 19 demanding to stop religious rights violation. “These difficulties should be regulated by the law. The Justice Ministry is working on one right now, which will guarantee the safety of all religious believers”, the President stated.
The President put special responsibility on the law enforcement bodies and said they are the ones obliged to guarantee the human rights.
“President issues these kinds of orders annually but cancels them later on”, Tina Khidasheli, representative of the NGO Young Lawyers Association of Georgia, told the TV Company Rustavi 2 today, believing that neither this particular order, issued on May 19, will have any effects.
