British Foreign Secretary Welcomed Shaw’s Release
(Tbilisi, November 7, Civil Georgia) – Foreign Secretary Jack Straw welcomed the news of Shaw’s release and thanked the Georgian authorities on November 6, UK Foreign Office reports.
“I was delighted to learn that Peter Shaw has been released,” Straw said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Our embassy in Tbilisi will do everything it can to ensure Mr. Shaw is reunited with his family as soon as possible. I am most grateful to those involved in securing Mr. Shaw’s release,” Jack Straw said.
Peter Shaw, 57 from Wales, was kidnapped from the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Tuesday June 18, 2002.
The British Government has been in close contact with the Georgian authorities throughout. The Government has also worked closely with the European Union delegation in Tbilisi, as Peter Shaw was contracted by the EU.
British citizen was freed after the special operation of the Georgian law enforcers in the evening on November 6 near Pankisi gorge.
One of the kidnappers was killed in the gunfire with the police, several were wounded and some of them could escape. Georgian law enforcement officials do not reveal other details of the operation.
