Azerbaijan Concerned Over Georgia’s Delay to Sign BTC Environment Assessment
(Tbilisi, November 21, Civil Georgia) – Azerbaijan expresses concern regarding Georgia’s delay to sign document on Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline’s possible impact on region’s fragile ecology that hinders implementation of the project.
“This is our great concern. We should solve the problem by the end of November. I will discuss the issue with President Shevardnadze,” Azerbaijani President Heidar Alyev told the reporters before departure to Prague at NATO summit.
President of the BP-Azerbaijan David Woodward in his letter to Georgian President said that without this document construction of the BTC pipeline would be delayed. At the moment, international environmental group works on the paper.
Environmental groups fear that the pipeline will damage regions ecology, especially Georgia’s Borjomi region, which is well-known for its mineral waters.
