Georgia Loses USD 20 Million in Energy System Annually

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 11, 2002) – Georgian State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania said at the government meeting today that the country loses up to USD 20 million annually because of the criminal groups’ activity in the energy sector of the country.  

The government meeting today discussed the situation in the energy system. State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze ordered the Energy Minister Davit Mirtskhulava to carry out changes in the staff of the ministry.

Last week Parliamentary commission, which investigated the reasons of the crisis in the energy system, delivered the report, which says that only USD 15 million was allocated to rehabilitate the system in last decade, while USD 400 million was granted to Georgia by the foreign donors.
