Burjanadze Wants Change of Peacekeepers’ Mandate

(Tbilisi, January 23, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson said at the news briefing in Moscow that Russian Peacekeepers’ mandate deployed in Abkhaz conflict zone should be prolonged only in case of change of mandate.

“The existing mandate can not promote solving of the conflict. In case the mandate assists in returning of the IDPs in Abkhazia, we will supports its prolongation,” Nino Burjanadze said on January 22.

“I do not think that President Shevardnadze would prolong the peacekeepers’ mandate, in the conditions when the railway is unilaterally reopened between Abkhazia and Russia and when Russia issues its passports to the population living in Abkhazia,” Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson stated.
