Shevardnadze at CIS Informal Summit

(Tbilisi, January 28, 2003. Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze participates in the informal summit of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Ukraine on January 28-29.

Meeting of the four Presidents of the Caucasus states (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia) is scheduled in the frames of the summit.

President Shevardnadze intends to push the Abkhazian issue and will try to convince the Russian President Putin to stop granting of the Russian citizenship to the population living in breakaway Abkhazia and close the railway link between Russia and Abkhazia.

Georgian authorities also want to expand the peacekeepers? mandate and to transfer the separation line between Abkhaz and Georgian forces to the river Galidzga, thus allowing return of the displaced persons to Gali district.
