CUG Wants Law Enforcers to Probe Political Parties

(Tbilisi February 25, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Pro-presidential Parliamentary faction Citizens? Union of Georgia (CUG) proposed a draft resolution, urging the General Prosecutor?s Office, Interior and Security Ministries to probe political parties? source of funding and alleged armed groups acting under the political parties? control.

MP Vitali Khazaradze, Chairman of the CUG faction said at the Parliamentary session on February 25 that according to the draft the law enforcers should present results of the probe within the month.

The opposition factions slammed the draft saying that the resolution would be used as a tool of pressure on political parties.

?Many statements have been made recently that several political parties have illegal armed groups, that is why we want from the law enforcers to examine all these statements and reports to the parliament,? Vitali Khazaradze said.
