Shevardnadze Calls to Curb Religious Violence

(Tbilisi. February 26, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian President said today at the government?s meeting that the religious violence must be curbed in Georgia. ?I am against religious extremism,? he added.

?We have to admit that there are numerous facts of violation of the religious minorities,? Shevardnadze said.

The President stated that Georgia took obligations, while joining the UN, Council of Europe and other international organizations ?to protect and respect religious minorities? rights.?

Georgian Public Defender in his report on human rights record in Georgia for the first half of 2002, delivered to the Parliament today, also emphasized on violation of religious minorities? rights.
