Parliament Discusses Draft Law on Increase of Minimal Salary
(Tbilisi. February 28, 2003. Civil Georgia) -Leader of opposition United Democrats Party MP Zurab Zhvania presented today at the Parliamentary session draft law regarding the increase of the minimal salary to the subsistence level.
According to the initiative of the United Democrats, the 2003 budget must include additional 116,1 million Lari (roughly 60 million USD) to increase minimal salary to the subsistence level – 115 Lari per month.
The initiative has become a major issue since December 2002, when the United Democrats wanted the Parliament to discuss their initiative before approval of the 2003 draft budget; however the pro-governmental factions went strongly against.
The pro-governmental factions are strongly critical of the salary increase, claiming it might lead the country to stagnation and inflation.
