Parliamentary Committee Says Law on Salary Increase Invalid

(Tbilisi. March 8, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Committee on Procedures ruled on March 7 meeting that the law on increase of the minimal salary to the subsistence level was adopted with the procedural violations.

The pro-governmental Parliamentary factions demanded to declare the law as invalid. The government categorically opposes the implementation of the law.

The Parliament adopted the law on February 28 with 90 votes. The law, elaborated by the opposition United Democrats Party considers increase of the minimal salary to the minimum subsistence level of 115 Lari (USD 52.9).

The decision of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedures will be discussed at the Parliamentary Bureau meeting, and only after the Bureau?s go-ahead the Committee?s decision will be discussed at the Parliamentary session.

At the session MPs will decide whether to take the Committee?s recommendation to declare the law as invalid into consideration, or not.
