Opposition Left the Plenary Session in Sign of Protest
(Tbilisi, May 24, 2003. Civil Georgia) – The opposition factions left the plenary session on May 23 in sign of protest. Leader of the New Rights faction David Gamkrelidze said that the opposition protested against the pro-governmental factions, members of which avoid registration at the plenary sessions to impede voting for the amendments to the Election Code.
“We are leaving the session and calling our colleagues to gather in front to the Parliament’s building on June 3 in a peaceful manifestation, to show the government that we want democratic elections” – Gamkrelidze said.
Despite pleas of the Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, the New Rights, the Democrats, the National Movement and Traditionalists factions left the session hall.
As a result of the protest, the Parliament was unable to vote to the number of issues, including amendments to the Election Code, due to insufficient quorum.
