Georgian MoD Warns Over Possible Chechen Fighters’ Incursion
(Tbilisi, June 13 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Georgian Ministry of Defense (MoD) official Col. Aleko Mchedlishvili said at the news briefing today that the incursion of Chechen fighters from Russia into Georgia is anticipated.
One of the leaders of the Presidential-backed alliance Irina Sarishvili-Chanturia said on June 12 that provocation is masterminded against Georgia, which considers infiltration of the 1000-strong group of Chechen fighters in Georgia.
“Maybe not 1000, but concentration of some groups of Chechen fighters is quite possible at the Russo-Georgian border,” Aleko Mchedlishvili said.
He said that the Defense Ministry is doing its best to prevent Chechen fighters penetration in Georgia, however, he added, lack of finances hinders to carry out affective pre-emptive measures.
