Georgian Security Chief Dismisses as Exaggeration US Claims Over Trafficking
(Tbilisi, June 14 2003, Civil Georgia) – Secretary of the Georgian Security Council Tedo Japaridze speaking at the news briefing on June 13 said that the estimations made in the report of the US Department of State on trafficking regarding Georgia are “exaggerated.”
“Particular facts of trafficking were really revealed. However, the US Department of State’s estimation is not adequate. Of course, the problem exists, though the estimations are exaggerated,” Tedo Japaridze said.
The US Department of State’s report on Trafficking in Persons issued on June 11 reads “the Government of Georgia does not fully comply with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and it is not making significant efforts to do so.”
According to the report the Governments that are not making significant efforts in this regard “face potential sanctions that include loss of certain types of US assistance.”
