Georgia Issues Travel Warning for Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, July 18, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian embassy in Russia issued a statement on July 17 urging the Russian citizens to avoid traveling in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia, because of grave crime situation.

“In this region [Abkhazia] serious crimes against foreign citizens became common. The criminals from other countries, including Russia, found a safe haven in Abkhazia,” Georgian embassy’s statement says, adding that Georgia can not guarantee safety of foreign citizens in Abkhazia.

The Abkhaz side also confirms increase of crimes in the region. At the meeting of the breakaway Abkhazia’s Interior Ministry board on July 16 de facto Prime Minister Khajimba demanded from the law enforcers more effective measures to crack down on criminals.
