Energy Minister Ignored MPs Request to Inform Parliament on Energy Deals

(Tbilisi, August 2, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Despite the Parliament’s request to Energy Minister Davit Mirtskhulava to inform the MPs on the recent energy deals with the Russian power giants, he did not appear in the Parliament on August 1.

After the categorical demand of the opposition MPs the State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze had to come in Parliament. He said that the government studies the deal between the AES and Russian Unified Energy Systems at the moment. Jorbenadze left the Parliament without answering critical questions of !
the MPs that caused opposition’s protest.

The Energy Minister’s ignorance made Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze to request the Parliament’s Committee on Procedure to raise the issue of responsibility of State Minister and Energy Minister.

Discussion of the energy deals will be continued in the Parliament on August 5.

Opposition MPs protested against the entry of the Russian Unified Energy Systems and Gazprom in Georgia and monopolization of the Georgian energy systems by the Russian power giants.
