Burjanadze Voices Concern Over UES Entry
(Tbilisi, August 4, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze urges the government to submit detailed information concerning the reasons of pull out of the US company AES from Georgia.
Burjanadze casts doubt over the statement made by President Shevardnadze, according to which Russia will not use its monopoly over the energy sector for political pressure on Georgia.
She said Russian politicians, who have particular influence on the Russian Unified Energy System (UES), may use the company in their personal interests.
“I am not against Russ!
ia. I go against selling of strategic facilities to any foreign country,” Nino Burjanadze said at the news briefing on August 4.
She hopes that President’s words will be justified and the entry of Russian company will not trigger the change of Georgia’s foreign political course.
