Burjanadze Slams Rule of Composition of CEC
(Tbilisi, August 6, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze slammed the rule of composition of the Central Election Commission adopted by the Parliament on August 5 and said she would “fight for holding fair and democratic elections.”
“The authorities were not sensible enough to discuss this issue with the opposition. We, the sober-minded people, will try to explain the authorities, that their policy is disastrous for the country. The only thing our population needs is holding of democratic !
elections and they should not be deprived of this chance,” Burjanadze said in the interview with the Rustavi 2 TV channel on August 5.
Parliament adopted on August 5 the rule of composition of the Central Election Commission (CEC). The adopted proposal neglects principle to compose the CEC on the parity basis.
The rule, which was supported by the pro-Presidential Parliamentary factions, as well as by the Industrialists and Revival, considers composition of the 15-member CEC with the five members of the Presidential-backed election alliance, three members of the Revival Union, two members of Industrialists. The opposition Labor Party, United Democrats, National Movement and the New Rights parties each will have one representative in the CEC. The Chairman of the CEC will be nominated by the OSCE.
