US Concerned Over Georgian, Gazprom Deal

(Tbilisi, August 8, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The US ambassador in Georgia Richard Miles expressed on August 7 concern regarding the entry of the Russian energy giant Gazprom in Georgia.

The US ambassador said that the entry of the Gazprom should not hinder implementation of the Shah-Deniz project, which is to carry Azerbaijani gas to Turkey and western Markets via Georgia.

In July Georgian Energy Minister Davit Mirtskhulava signed an agreement with Gazprom over the strategic cooperation for 25 years, causing protest of the political circles in Georgia.
