OSCE Ready to Nominate CEC Chairman

(Tbilisi, August 23, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Netherlands Foreign Minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, on August 22 declared the Chair’s readiness to submit candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) to the President of Georgia, OSCE mission in Georgia reports.

In accordance with the newly adopted Election Code the President will then appoint one of these candidates to the position of Chairperson.

he course of next week, representatives of both the OSCE Chairman-in-Office and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe will arrive in Tbilisi to establish a shortlist for submission to the President,” the OSCE statement reads.

The OSCE calls for public participation in identifying qualified candidates and expresses the hope that academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, civic associations and political parties will encourage qualified citizens of Georgia to put forward their names.
