Interior, Security Ministers Visited Pankisi Gorge

(Tbilisi, August 25, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili visits Pankisi Gorge today to observe situation after the year of launch of anti-crime operation in the gorge.

Georgian troops were dispatched in the lawless gorge on August 25, 2002. By the end of the 2002 Georgian law enforcers announced that there were no more Chechen fighters, or criminal gangs in the gorge.
 
Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania visited Pankisi on August 24. He said that the situation in the gorge is stable.

“Last year we came here with arms to restore rule. I hope ne!
xt year we’ll come here together with the tourists,” Khaburdzania told the reporters in Pankisi gorge.
