Opposition Party Sues CEC
(Tbilisi, August 29, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The opposition National Movement party filed a lawsuit against the Central Election Commission (CEC) in the Tbilisi District Court on August 29.
The party is protesting against the ruling adopted by the CEC on August 25, which defines the principles of coverage of the election process by the state and private mass media.
The ruling prohibits the media from broadcasting any reports that include pre-election campaigning by political parties 50 days before the parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 2. TV and radio companies are also prohibited from broadcasting any news or entertai!
nment programs with political candidates’ participation.
Koba Davitashvili of the National Movement said the ruling violates the rights of mass media and separate political parties, that is inadmissible for the party.
The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) also filed a lawsuit against the ruling on August 28.
