Tbilisi, Moscow Deadlocked over Withdrawal from Military Bases
(Tbilisi, September 4, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Russian-Georgian talks, held in Tbilisi on September 2-3 over the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Akhalkalaki, southern Georgia, and Batumi, the capital of Adjarian Autonomous Republic, yielded no results.
The sides failed to agree over the terms of the withdrawal. Georgia demands the disbandment of Russian military bases within three years, while Russia still insists on 11 years.
The next round of the Georgian-Russian talks will be held in early October.
