President Rejects Burjanadze’s Proposal on Emergency Meeting
President Shevardnadze said on October 6 there is no need in holding an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the upcoming elections.
Nino Burjanadze, the Parliamentary Chairperson and the leader of the Burjanadze-Democrats opposition bloc, proposed to hold a meeting to discuss “beyond the closed doors, without TV cameras and in a working atmosphere how to secure free and fair elections.”
Burjanadze expressed concern regarding the intimidation of voters in the regions by the local authorities and police.
President Shevardnadze said in his radiobroadcast that the extended meeting of the government will be held on October 8. He invited the Parliamentary Chairperson to attend the meeting.
