Controversy Persists Over Kutaisi Single-Mandate Constituency
The authorities seek to cancel results of the November 2 parliamentary elections in Kutaisi single-mandate constituency, where Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson and leader of opposition alliance Burjanadze-Democrats is far ahead.
As anticipated Nino Burjanadze received 35% of the votes, while her contender Dodo Shelia of pro-governmental election alliance For New Georgia gained only 14%.
However ballot boxes were hijacked from two precincts in Kutaisi, thus the pro-presidential bloc demands cancellation of results in entire Kutaisi.
Nino Burjanadze blamed that the authorities try to prevent her to take a seat in the Parliament.
βI expected all kind of irregularities, but I could not really imagine that the government could dare to commit this kind of impudence,β Nino Burjanadze said in the live interview to the Rustavi 2 TV channel late on November 3.
βI will do my best to protect the votes of my supporters in Kutaisi,β Burjanadze added.
