Shevardnadze’s Supporters Rallied in Kvemo Kartli

Supporters of the pro-presidential election bloc For New Georgia rallied today in Marneuli, town in the Kvemo Kartli region.

Spokesperson of the pro-presidential election bloc For New Georgia Irina Sarishvili-Chanturia and one of the leaders of the bloc and former governor of the Kvemo Kartli region Levan Mamaladze attended the meeting.

“I cannot understand how the election results in Kvemo Kartli should be cancelled, as claimed by the opposition. The elections were fair here [in Kvemo Kartli],” Mamaladze said.

He drew parallels between the National Movement opposition party led by Mikheil Saakashvili and Nazis. Mamaladze said National Movement’s demands “are nothing more but expression of Nazism and extremism.”

“If the authorities are not able to maintain order in the country, it will fail to protect its own population,” spokesperson of the pro-presidential election bloc For New Georgia Irina Sarishvili-Chanturia said while commenting the protest rally in Tbilisi demanding Shevardnadze’s resignation.

International observers reported wide-spread irregularities in Kvemo Kartli region during the November 2 parliamentary elections.

Recently the court ruled to recount votes cast on November 2 in Bolnisi, town in Kvemo Kartli.
