University Rector Keeps Position

Rector of the Tbilisi State University Roin Metreveli returned on November 27 to his position as a result of persistent protest rallies by the one part of students and lecturers, who demanded his immediate return to the position.

Roin Metreveli resigned on November 26 under the pressure of the youth movement Kmara (Enough), who accused him of corruption. Supporters of Roin Metreveli called on the country?s new leadership for non-interference in the Tbilisi University?s internal affairs.

Interim President Nino Burjanadze and opposition?s presidential candidate Mikheil Saakashvili met protesters and said that the university is ?an autonomous structure and authorities have no right to interfere in the university?s affairs.?
