Burjanadze Vows to Compose CEC on Parity Basis
Interim President Nino Burjanadze said today that she will foster composition of the Central Election Commission (CEC) “on the parity basis.”
“It is absolutely inadmissible to compose the CEC like it was done by the previous authorities, when the government was in full control of the commission,” Nino Burjanadze told reporters on November 29.
The OSCE called on Georgia’s new leadership on November 28 for “the balanced composition of the electoral administrative bodies.”
According to the amendments to the election code approved by the Parliament on November 28, the President of Georgia appoints the Chairman of the CEC with approval of the Parliament.
Chairperson of the Central Elections Commission Nana Devdariani, who along with the former authorities was criticized for fraudulent November 2 parliamentary elections, filed resignation on November 28.
No agreement has been reached yet by the political parties regarding the rule of composition of the new CEC.
