Defense Minister Rules out Army Involvement in Politics
Georgian Defense Minister Davit Tevzadze gave his first press conference today, since Shevardnadze was ousted and said that the situation at the military bases throughout Georgia ?is calm,? however he did not rule out that some military unites might fall under the political pressure.
He said that the armed forces are the mean of foreign policy, which should not be used in settling internal political disputes.
Davit Tevzadze dismissed speculations over his possible involvement in the ?counter-revolution.? The new leadership has warned earlier that there some forces in the country willing to challenge the current authorities.
Speculations sparked after the Defense Minister started touring the military bases around Georgia.
?The [Defense] Minister is working in accordance to the plan which has been agreed with the acting commander-in-chief [Nino Burjanadze, the Interim President],? Davit Tevzadze said.
Davit Tevzadze also visited military base located in Batumi, Adjara Autonomous Republic. In the wake of Eduard Shevardnadze?s resignation Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze announced state of emergency in the region and said he cuts ties with the new leadership of the country.
