Parliament to Discuss New CEC Chief Candidature

The Parliamentary session, which is convened for November 30, will discuss issue of candidacies for the Central Election Commission’s Chairmanship.

According to the amendments to the election code approved by the Parliament on November 28, the President of Georgia appoints the Chairman of the CEC with approval of the Parliament.

No official candidacy for the position has been nominated so far.

Unofficial reports say there are two possible candidatures for the position: legal expert Davit Usupashvili and Zurab Chiaberashvili, the head of the election observer NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy.

However Davit Usupashvili has already rejected the proposal, thus it is anticipated that Zurab Chiaberashvili will be the only candidacy for the CEC Chairmanship post.
