Former Security Officials Arrested
In the wake of Interior Minister Giorgi Baramidze’s warnings over the possible military coup, Georgian law enforcers arrested four former members of the special security unit, set up by the former security chief Igor Giorgadze, who is wanted for terrorist attack against Eduard Shevardnadze in 1995.
They were arrested on charges of illegal possession of weapons. However, as the lawyer claims four detainees are employees of a private security agency and therefore permitted to carry arms.
Their lawyer also said that former members of the special security unit became the victims of the political persecution of Giorgadze.
Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Baramidze said on December 19 “certain forces in Georgia and abroad are preparing to launch a military coup.”
