Burjanadze Supports Constitutional Amendments

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze supports introduction of Cabinet of Ministers, saying that the country should have a new style of governance.

“The constitutional changes and new style of governance does not imply the legislative body’s weakening,” she added.

“We are holding consultations over constitutional amendments with the President [Mikheil Saakashvili] and the State Minister [Zurab Zhvania]. The country should have a strong President,” Burjanadze told reporters on February 1.

It is unclear yet whether the President will have the right to dissolve the Parliament or not. Earlier State Minister Zurab Zhvania said that the executive branch of the government should have the right “to dissolve ineffective Parliament.”

On January 22 Nino Burjanadze said that she will not be the Chairperson of “the weak Parliament,” sparking speculations that there is a disagreement between Saakashvili and Burjanadze over the constitutional changes.
