NGOs against Appointment of Provincial Governors by President

The group of influential non-governmental organizations expressed concern today regarding the government’s intention to maintain the rule of appointment of the provincial governors’ by the President.

According to the constitutional amendments proposed by President Saakashvili to the Parliament, the President will appoint his representative to the regions (governors) with the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

In the letter sent to the President the representatives of civil society organizations say that this proposal contradicts creation of the self-governance system in the country.
