Tbilisi Dispatched Mine Clearers to Adjara
Special purpose unit of the Georgian internal troops to carry out mine-clearing operation in the areas mined by the Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’s security forces, Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze told reporters on May 5.
“President Saakashvili asked me to make a statement in order to explain that Georgian central government will not use force in Adjara. There is no need in this,” Nino Burjanadze said.
She said that several units of internal troops were dispatched to Adjara in order to “carry out mine-clearing operations at Choloki and Kakuti bridges,” which were blown up by Abashidze’s forces on May 2.
Meanwhile, Georgian central authorities removed the barricades, which blocked the administrative borders between the Adjarian Autonomy and the rest of Georgia.
