Georgia to Dispatch Medics to Afghanistan

Georgian Defense Minister Gela Bezhuashvili, who will assume the post of Secretary of the National Security Council in the new cabinet, said on June 9 that NATO requested Georgia to dispatch medics to Afghanistan, as a part of Georgia?s contribution to the peacekeeping operation there.

?We are ready to send medics to Afghanistan under the auspices of NATO. Highly skilled doctors have already expressed a willingness to leave for Afghanistan,? Gela Bezhuashvili said at a news briefing on June 9.

A Georgian delegation, made up of Gela Bezhuashvili, Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Maj. Givi Iukuridze, visited NATO headquarters in Brussels on June 7 to discuss Georgia?s Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) with the alliance.
