Khajimba’s Supporters Rally
Supporters of the pro-governmental presidential candidate Raul Khajimba gathered on October 12 in the Sokhumi Philharmonic Hall to express protest regarding the decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC), which declared opposition candidate Sergey Bagapsh the president-elect.
According to the Sokhumi-based Abkhaziya.info web-site the supporters vowed that they will keep protesting till “the legal and fair decision” is not taken regarding the elections.
Acting Prime Minister of unrecognized Abkhazian Republic Nodar Khashba said, while addressing the supporters of Khajimba, that the outcome of the elections is unclear yet, as the legal procedures are not over. “We should wait for final decision of the Supreme Court,” acting Prime Minister said.
Raul Khajimba appealed the Supreme Court demanding cancellation of the Central Election Commission’s October 11 protocol, which declares Sergey Bagapsh as the winner of the elections with 50,08% support.
But hearing of Khajimba’s appeal by the Supreme Court is pending. Itar-Tass news agency reported quoting Chairman of the Abkhaz Supreme Court Alla Avidzba as saying that the court can launch hearing only after the new members of the Central Election Commission are appointed. The Chairman of the 15-member CEC Sergey Smir, together with other three members filed resignation on October 11, citing the pressure from the supporters of Sergey Bagapsh.
