Moscow Says Tbilisi’s Concerns over Abkhazia ‘Groundless’

Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Valerie Loshchinin said on November 13 that Tbilisi’s accusations over Moscow’s interference in Georgia’s internal affairs are groundless.

An information note issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry reads that Loshchinin met with the Georgian ambassador to Russia Valeri Chechelashvili on November 13. The latter expressed Georgia’s strong protests regarding the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on November 12 in which Moscow warned that it will undertake measures in order to protect its interests in Abkhazia.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said that Moscow cannot ignore the increasing tension in Abkhazia, since tens of thousands of residents of Abkhazia are Russian citizens and Abkhazia also borders Russia, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s information note.

“Urgent normalization of the situation in Abkhazia is necessary to restore security and stability in this region with the observance of law. This is of vital importance for the resumption of peaceful talks over the settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict,” the statement reads.
