Abkhaz Parliament Recognizes Bagapsh’s Victory

The Parliament of the unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia adopted a decree on November 26, which recognized the October 3 presidential elections valid and opposition leader Sergey Bagapsh as the President-elect, Apsnypress reports.

According to the decree, the Parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers and state security guard should provide a solemn ceremony of inauguration of the newly elected President within terms of the constitution.

Earlier on, November 17, the Abkhaz Parliament adopted a statement which stated that the November 12 events, which saw the opposition capture the governmental offices in the capital Sokhumi, “can not be regarded as a coup.”

By virtue of this statement the Parliament sided with opposition leader Sergey Bagapsh. Earlier, both outgoing President Vladislav Ardzinba and Prime Minister Nodar Khashba described the November 12 events as “an armed coup.”
