CEC Launches Registration of MP Candidates for By-Elections

Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) launched registration of candidates running for the by-elections in Tbilisi?s two ? Krtsanisi and Didube, constituencies as well as in Gori and Zestaponi provincial constituencies, scheduled for October 24.

Only Jumber Patiashvili, who led the Ertoba political movement and who was the Georgian communist leader in late 80s, has applied the CEC for running in Gori single-mandate constancy so far.

According to unofficial reports, ex-Mayor of Tbilisi Vano Zodelava intends to run for the Didube single-mandate constituency, former MP Guram Sharadze ? in the Krtsanisi single-mandate constituency, former governor of the Imereti region Temur Shashiashvili ? for the Zestaponi single-mandate constituency. All of them were supporters of Georgia?s ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze.

The deadline for submitting applications for participation in the by-elections expires on September 23.

By-elections were appointed after several MPs, who won the single-mandate elections on 2 November 2003, moved to the government. Among them are: Giorgi Baramidze, currently the Defense Minister; Gia Getsadze, currently the Deputy Interior Minister; Irakli Okruashvili, currently the Interior Minister; Davit Mumladze, currently governor of the Imereti region.
