South Ossetian ‘Independence Day’ Marked in Tskhinvali

President of the unrecognized South Ossetian Republic Eduard Kokoev reiterated on September 20 that South Ossetia “will not revise its policy,” which aims at joining the Russian Federation.

Kokoev was speaking in the capital Tskhinvali on September 20 during an official ceremony to mark the 14th anniversary of South Ossetia’s de facto independence.

On September 20, 1990 the local parliament of Georgia’s South Ossetian Autonomous District announced the creation of the South Ossetian Soviet Republic, which expressed a willingness to join the Soviet Union. In 1992, following the referendum, authorities in breakaway South Ossetia announced the region’s independence, which has never been internationally recognized.
