Georgia Protests Resumption of Sokhumi-Moscow Railway Link
A group of Georgian citizens launched a protest rally on September 27 against the recent restoration of the railway link between the capital of the unrecognized republic of Abkhazia, Sokhumi and Russia’s capital Moscow.
“We demand the suspension of anti-Georgian rhetoric in the Russian media,” one of the organizations of the rally, Zaza Macharashvili, said on September 27.
Protesters are demanding the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping troops who are stationed in Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
A similar protest rally was held in mid-August outside the Russian embassy in Tbilisi, which triggered the Russian authorities to write two protest statements to the Georgian authorities.
