Georgia’s New National Symbol Approved

The Parliament approved the new national symbol with 130 votes to 3 at the session on October 1.

The new symbol shows a shield with St. George, crowned and supported by two heraldic lions. The motto reads “Power in Unity”. The minor changes are still to be made to the coat-of-arms, according to the authors.

After the “Rose Revolution” Georgia has changed its national flag and the national anthem. On May 25, the Parliament failed to adopt the draft of the symbol proposed by the relevant commission. The draft showed the shield split four parts, with the second and third parts showing the historical symbols of East and West Georgia, while the first and fourth parts showed St. George – Georgia’s patron saint.

Until today, it was expected that re-worked version of the same draft would be submitted. However, apparently after the consultations held yesterday, the decision was made to vote for a simpler version of the coat-of-arms. Georgia’s current flag also flies St. George cross as its central element.
