Georgia Slams Russian MPs’ Plans to Monitor Abkhazian Elections

In a statement issued on October 1 the Georgian Parliament called on Russian parliamentarians to refrain from sending observers to Abkhazia in order to monitor the presidential elections in the unrecognized republic, which are scheduled for October 3.

According to MP Salome Samadashvili, the Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, a group of Russian MPs and several officials from Russia’s North Ossetia plan to attend the elections in the breakaway region and serve as observers.

“This fact openly contradicts Russia’s official position, which recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. We call on Russian MPs not to violate international norms or the legislation of Georgia,” the statement reads.
