PM’s Address Ahead of Elections

Speaking at a government session on Friday morning, PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who chairs ruling GDDG party, called on voters to go to the polling stations in the October 8 parliamentary elections and to support Georgia’s “bright, European future.”

“Only a few hours separate us from October 8, when we should hold elections of particular significance for the development of our country. These elections will mark a truly important step to the future of democratic Georgia,” he said.

“First of all, I want to call on all the voters to go to the polling stations and vote for Georgia’s better future and for Georgia European future and I am confident that our country will live in a better Georgia on October 9,” the PM said.

Kvirikashvili, who has refused to participate in televised debates hosted by the public broadcaster and also in separate debates offered by a private broadcaster, said that he’s “confident the population values very important steps that have been undertaken in the recent years in the process of building a democratic state.”

“I want to tell the Interior Ministry and [minister] Giorgi [Mgebrishvili] – your role is significant to secure order and environment needed for free elections and I am confident that each employee [of the Interior Ministry] will spare no effort to ensure peaceful, free elections in Georgia and to protect every vote,” the PM said.

“Our government has done everything for securing level playing field in the pre-election period, which was truly unprecedented and it has been noted by all of our friends,” Kvirikashvili said.

He, however, also said that explosion of opposition UNM MP Givi Targamdze’s car marred otherwise calm pre-election period and added that he is confident that those responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

“It was directed against the state,” Kvirikashvili said.

“I am sure that October 8 will be one of the most important days in the life of our country and our citizens will express their will freely and of course will support Georgia’s bright, European future and I am sure that this day will be completely peaceful,” he said.

“I once again call on our citizens to use this day in order to assume responsibility for the development of our country,” the PM said.
