Justice Ministry Rejects Influential Governors’ Appeal on CUG Affair

(Tbilisi, March 29, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Justice Ministry rejected on March 28 Kvemo Kartli governor Levan Mamaladze’s request to annul decision of Citizens’ Union of Georgia [CUG] party concerning the creation of Organizational Council to rule the party.

The Organizational Council chairman is Zurab Zhvania leader of reformers faction within the CUG, who opposes Levan Mamaladze. The most members of the Organizational Council are Zhvania’s supporters.

The Organizational Council was created on December 22, 2001 at the CUG assembly to replace the post of party chairmanship.

President Shevardnadze quitted the party chairman’s post last September.
