Armenians’ Fait in Georgia Concerns Armenian Premier
(Tbilisi, April 5, Civil Georgia) – Andranik Markarian, Prime-Minister of Armenia expressed concern with the fait of Armenians living in Abkhazia and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions of Georgia during the meeting with the Georgian Chief of General Staff Joni Pirtskhalaishvili on April 5.
Armenian news agency Mediamax reports that Markarian expressed his hope that “the Georgian authorities will not allow certain political forces to destabilize the situation in these regions [Abkhazian, Samtskhe-Javakheti].”
The majority of population of Javakheti region is ethnic Armenian. Large number of ethnic Armenians lives in Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazian region as well.
Some of the local Armenian organizations in Javakheti demand autonomy for the region and are against of Russian military base’s withdrawal from Akhalkalaki, main town of Javakheti.
