The State Minister – CUG’s New Leader

(Tbilisi, June 29, Civil Georgia) – As anticipated the Citizens’ Union of Georgia (CUG) party’s assembly unanimously elected on the post of the party’s chairman State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze on June 29.

President Shevardnadze, who held the chairman’s post before the last September is elected on the post of the honorable chairman of the CUG.

“I decided to reanimate the party [CUG] after the local elections, when I saw that the radical forces are obtaining popularity and power,” President Shevardnadze stated at the assembly. Mikheil Saakashvili’s National Movement and the Labors Party of Georgia won the elections in Tbilisi.

This is the first assembly of the party after the reformers group led by Zurab Zhvania was forced to leave the party and the pro-Presidential group took over the CUG.
