Shevardnadze Downplays MPs’ Hungerstrike

(Tbilisi, July 18, 2003, Civil Georgia) -Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said on July 18 while commenting on the hunger strike of the members of the Parliamentary National Movement faction that there is no real ground for protest.

7 members of the Parliament’s National Democratic faction went on hunger strike on July 16 in the Justice Ministry of Georgia demanding funding of budgetary backlog on pensions.

Eduard Shevardnadze said distribution of current pensions has already started. “We have agreed with the IMF on the schedule of funding the budgetary backolog on pensions,” he added.

“They [hungerstikers] only want to lose weight,” Shevardnadze said.
